 Artist's Statement

I begin with an idea or feeling that I want to create in glass.  The malleable nature of glass makes it the perfect medium for exploration.  I am drawn to the way glass interacts with light and its seductive qualities of transparency, translucency and reflection.

My work is influenced by the kaleidoscope of colors and textures found in nature. Growing up in Walla Walla, Washington which is nestled against the Blue Mountains in a valley oasis, I was inspired by the changing landscapes of four distinctive seasons. Further intrigued by the majestic beauty of the Puget Sound region, I moved to Tacoma where I began my study of kiln fired glassworking under the tutelage of many prominent glass artists.

It is intensely satisfying to me to transform cut sheets of glass, metals and powders into unique objects that are defined by their texture, color and design.  Exploring new techniques and researching different methods of expressing myself artistically has created exciting new challenges for me.       ~ Kathy Porter

In a process that takes several days, kiln fired glass begins with sheets of special art glass that are hand cut and layered. The pieces are fused together in a kiln at 1450º. Then the glass is cooled slowly in a procedure called annealing to produce a solid, stable form. For bas relief effects an additional fusing cycle is required. The last step is called slumping where the glass is placed back in kiln in a mold producing the final form. Crushed glass, powders, copper and precious metals are sometimes included in the piece as well as sandcarved designs.
